So . . . um, probably right along with Japan, Canada, and the Scandinavian countries, and a few other holdouts (including now The Gambia – hooray!), it occurs to me that Angela Merkel’s Germany is probably, of those aforementioned countries, the strongest bulwark now against authoritarianism. Hey, it only took 70 years for a paradigm of totalitarianism to be defeated by a paragon of democracy only for Germany to become a new paradigm of democracy fending off the old paradigm of democracy that has become now the new paradigm of authoritarianism [insert hysterical laughter here for about half an hour].
